The figure above depicts a block-diagram schematic of a closed loop control system. As you can see the actuator block is placed between controller (control block) and the plant. The control unit sends control signal to the actuator which forces actuator to make a change properly in the plant by manipulating process variables such as flow, temperature, pressure, level of liquid, or electrical variables. In the other word, actuators amplify the instrument signal provided by controller (4-20 mA) to provide required energy for doing a job in plant.
